The Los Angeles Rams have bolstered their defensive line by signing free agent defensive lineman Decarius Hawthorne to a one-year deal, the team announced on Tuesday. The signing adds depth to the Rams’ defensive front as they prepare for the upcoming 2025 NFL season.
Hawthorne, a Birmingham, Alabama native, recently participated in the Buffalo Bills’ rookie minicamp after going undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft. Despite a brief stint with the Bills, he was released shortly after, paving the way for his move to Los Angeles. The signing was first reported by multiple sources, including posts on X and official team announcements.
A Proven Collegiate Performer
Hawthorne’s collegiate career spanned five seasons, beginning with four years at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) before transferring to the University of South Florida (USF) for his final season in 2024. At USF, he emerged as a standout, starting all 13 games and leading the Bulls’ defensive linemen with 40 tackles. His 10.5 tackles for loss ranked second on the team, and he contributed 2.5 sacks, three quarterback hurries, two pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. His performance earned him Second Team All-AAC honors from conference coaches.
During his time at FAU, Hawthorne appeared in 34 games, recording 46 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, and five sacks. His most productive season with the Owls came in 2023, when he tallied 18 tackles, seven for loss, and 4.5 sacks across 12 games. Over his entire college career, Hawthorne amassed 86 tackles, 25 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery in 47 games.
Scouting Profile and Fit with the Rams
NFL draft analyst Dane Brugler ranked Hawthorne as the 114th defensive tackle prospect in the 2025 draft class, highlighting his potential as a developmental player. At 6’2″ and 295 pounds, Hawthorne brings a stout presence to the defensive line, with the ability to disrupt both the run and pass games. His quickness off the line and knack for penetrating the backfield make him a versatile addition to the Rams’ defensive scheme.
The Rams, who have made several roster moves this offseason, view Hawthorne as a high-upside player who can compete for a rotational role. The team has been active in reshaping its defensive line, recently signing veteran Poona Ford to a three-year deal and activating defensive end Larrell Murchison off Injured Reserve. Hawthorne’s signing aligns with the Rams’ strategy of blending young talent with experienced players to build depth.
